I’ve been recruiting top talent across the Sales and Marketing landscape since 2013, and I’ve never seen the market move as quickly (or as impatiently) as it does today. The entire talent ecosystem has shrunk, and with it, the acceptable window for hiring.

For business leaders and hiring managers, this new reality presents a critical dilemma: Time to Hire is now directly proportional to Revenue Lost.

🤞The False Promise of ‘Ready, Fire, Aim’

The biggest shift I’ve observed over recent years is the dangerous reliance on automation and DIY recruitment. (Read more about The Risks of DIY Recruitment here…)

Systems and platforms promise to streamline the process, leading many companies to adopt a “Ready, Fire, Aim” approach.  Spray out an advert, automate the screening, and hope a candidate sticks.

However, in the highly competitive Sales and Marketing world, this strategy is failing.

Why? Because the modern candidate, raised on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, has a drastically reduced attention span for drawn-out, impersonal hiring processes. When a candidate doesn’t receive the necessary human touchpoints, they quickly lose engagement and are often snapped up by a competitor with a faster, more empathetic process.

We recently had a client, a prominent IT company, that lost an A-player candidate because they stretched a crucial interview stage across three weeks. As a result, the candidate moved elsewhere. I advised them: You must hire within a concise window – a maximum of three weeks for the entire process – or you risk losing your best people.

My advice, though initially pushed back on, was proven right when the company eventually conceded, “Marty, you were right.”
