Interviews can be very stressful situations for most people with anxiety causing hesitancy and in extreme circumstances, panic. However, by applying effective breathing techniques you can quickly transform form a state of near panic to a state of relaxation, which should play a major part in enhancing your interview performance.
Below are 3 effective breathing techniques to conduct before your interview.
Tip 1: Inhale and Exhale
Before your interview inhale through your mouth for four seconds and then exhale for four. Count to four when you are inhaling and exhaling as this will greatly assist the process. And act as an immediate stress alleviator.
Tip 2: Breathe through your nostrils
Cover one nostril with you thumb and inhale and exhale through the other. Alternatively when you have inhaled through the right nostril, immediately close the left nostril and exhale through the right (i.e. the one you had initially closed). This technique allows you inhale through one nostril and exhale through the other.
Tip 3: Visualisation
This entails closing your eyes, breathing heavily and focussing on positive happy images in your imagination. This will not only relax you but put you in a positive mind-set prior to your interview. Obviously with Tip 2 and Tip 3, these are best practised prior to your interview as practicing nostril breathing techniques could come across as peculiar during the interview process.
Simple breathing techniques can act as a great method of alleviating stress, helping ensure that you can focus on giving peak performance in a stressful interview situation.
