Coping mechanisms in pursuing a successful career was top of the agenda at the Abrivia Leaders Series breakfast on Thursday 13th August in Dublin at which the guest speakers, rugby expert, journalist and author Brent Pope and psychologist Dr Claire Hayes, outlined the ways in which organisations can support their employees’ mental health and reduce workplace stress.
The Abrivia Leaders Series was established by the recruitment consultancy in 2015 to help raise awareness and funds for Aware, Ireland’s leading organization supporting people experiencing depression and related mood disorders.
Brent Pope spoke eloquently about his own struggles with mental health and urged employers to break the ‘cycle of stigma’ around mental health problems in the workplace. Brent said “We should make it almost normal for staff, including upper management, to talk comfortably about their problems. Your attendance here today means that you recognise that a lot of mental health problems are treatable and in fact more normal than many think. You are no longer alone, with the correct strategies in place and more attention paid to removing the stigma around mental health in the work environment, combined with empathy and support, then I am confident that many of those who experience some sort of blip on life’s journey will soon be back to full productivity and enjoying life like before. “
Dr Claire Hayes, Clinical Director with Aware, outlined Aware’s Wellness@Work programmes which educate staff and managers about mental health and how to manage concerns and challenges in the workplace. Dr Hayes said, “The workplace has become more challenging, more pressured and for many, considerably more stressful. An increasing number of people at all levels in organisations experience mental health difficulties and companies are rightly being asked to focus on how they can support employees better.”
“Aware offers two Wellness@Work training options for companies. A 45-minute session for all employees offers practical coping tips and techniques to help manage everyday issues. A half-day session for managers and supervisors aims to help key staff deal with the impact of mental health issues on individual employees and the workplace generally. I strongly encourage companies to avail of these programmes as better mental health awareness and management can positively impact individuals who may have difficulties, as well as raising staff morale, reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity.”
