You will normally be offered a glass of water during your interview. Many candidates feel that they will be inconveniencing their interviewer by accepting a glass of water and only delay the commencement of the interviewer, to the annoyance of your potential employer. However this is rarely the case and there are many compelling advantages of drinking water during your interview, even if you are not thirsty.
Reason 1: A glass of water acts as an excellent prop
You are asked very tricky question and you need 5-10 seconds to gather your thoughts before you deliver a detailed answer. This is where sipping a glass of water comes in, distracting your interviewer and avoiding a potentially awkward silence.
Reason 2: It keeps the vocal chords hydrated
Nervousness can often cause your throat to dry up and you may develop a squeaky voice or an irritating dry cough. This is where a glass of water comes in as an immediate solution to a dry mouth or squeaky voice.
Reason 3: Your interviewer may also want a beverage
Often an interviewer will offer you a beverage as they want one themselves. Your interview may actually be disappointed if you decline their offer. The best advice is to accept the offer.
The overwhelming evidence is to accept a glass of water during your interview as you never know when it will be required during the course of your interview.
