For many people the most frustrating part of an average day is time spent in the workplace. Some workplaces are paralysed by bureaucracy, whilst others have a culture of conflict at every turn, where even the most menial of tasks become exhausting to execute. Creativity is often stifled and those who have a genuine passion for their work often suffer from career burnout in this toxic environment. Some decide to conform and keep their head down, taking an “I don’t care” approach, whilst other decide to swiftly move on to a new opportunity where the hope is that these workplace frustrations will cease to exist.
However most workplaces will have some frustrating processes/procedures/colleagues/bosses so the key question is how we conquer workplace frustration.
“To conquer frustration, one must remain intensely focussed on the outcome, not the obstacles” -T.F Hodge
When we focus all our energy on obstacles, frustration invariably sets in and the chances of success decrease dramatically. However if we focus on positive outcomes, obstacles become less significant and solutions become easier to find and completing tasks or projects suddenly becomes more attainable. Focussing on outcomes helps lessen the impact of frustrations, which will ultimately lead to more self-fulfilment on your journey to career success.
