CRH has yet again topped the Irish Times Top 1000 companies in Ireland list. With a turnover of €27.1 billion, a profit of €1.74 billion and 86,778 employees globally, Cement Roadstone Holdings is indeed a phenomenal home grown Irish success story.
The genesis of this fantastic company started back in the 1930’s when two brothers, Tom and Donal Roche set up a small sand and gravel business in what is described as a small yard in Inchicore, Dublin. The company was initially called Roche Brothers, then the Castle Sand Company and in 1949 Roadstone was born. In 1970 Roadstone merged with Irish Cement to become Cement Roadstone Holdings(CRH).
In 1978, CRH made its first foray into the United States, with the purchase of Amcor, a concrete products company based in Utah. In 1985, the Americas Materials division was established and it was onward and upward from then on with a series of strategic acquisitions. This successful strategy continues to the present day, making CRH the largest building materials company in North America and one of the largest building materials companies in the world, making it truly inspirational story for Irish entrepreneurs with global ambitions.
