The interview process can be a long and stressful process for candidates seeking to land their ideal role. Competency based interviews are becoming more and more prevalent by both the HR side of the business, but also direct hiring managers, during the recruitment process. Competency based interviews allow the interviewer to gain an insight into how the candidate would deal with a practical situation which would present itself in a typical day, within the role you are applying for.
Competency based interviews can throw candidate in an interview situation and have a negative impact on their chances of securing the position. However, these types of interviews should be seen as an opportunity to really showcase your skillset and give you a chance to allow the hiring manager to envision you within the role and the value that you can add to the position. The key to a competency based interview is to be prepared and practice extensively beforehand, to ensure a smooth delivery.
I always recommend that candidates have 2-3 focused project examples that they have worked on previously, relating to the job spec. If you will be able to talk through relevant examples in a very metric driven way, you will demonstrate your ability to fulfil the role. The format that I find works best when structuring these answers, is the STAR format. This will allow a candidate to touch on all the relevant requirements within a job specification.
Describe the situation as a backdrop for the task you needed to deliver. This gives the interviewer a detailed overview of the environment surrounding the project. Focus on:
• Team size/ reporting structure
• Technology used Give a breakdown of what % of your time is spent on each technology
• Your deliverables
Give a detailed account of what was required. What was the goal of this project? What was the budget/ timeline? What was the desired outcome and reason for project in first place
What action did you take to deliver on your requirements?
What stakeholders did you interact with?
What was a typical day for you on this project and what was your 2-3 main tasks on a daily basis?
What was the outcome and how did YOU demonstrate value
If you follow these guidelines, hopefully you will perform very well during your next competency based interview.
