Do you have a personal strategic plan where you have identified you clear career goals and potential stumbling blocks which are in your way to achieving these goals?
Business guru Brian Tracy refers to personal strategic planning as measuring a return on energy on a personal level. This differs from businesses who generally measure returns on investments as a critical success factor. Energy in this case refers to the “physical, emotional and mental energies you invest in your career”. This return on energy should be reviewed on a regular basis and will involve continuous questions. Am I working longer hours but making little progress in regards my career plan? Am I using my most valuable skills to their full potential to achieve my career goals and am I receiving more remuneration as a result?
These questions are infinite. It is up to you to devise the hard questions you need to answer on a regular basis in order to ensure you stay on course with your strategic career plan.
You should approach a personal strategic planning in the same way a business approaches strategic planning in the corporate world. With this in mind you will need to write down a vision statement (where you want to be in 5 years’ time), a mission statement (based on your most values skills, how will you achieve this vision?).
In regards goal setting focus on the purpose of your goal rather than the goal it and this will make it more attainable. Do you want to get promoted in order to ensure your children get the best education? Do you want to be in a business environment where you use your favourite skills/competencies on a daily basis, thus making work more enjoyable?
Once you have decided on your values, mission and purpose, Brian Tracy recommends you break you mission down into daily tasks and activities.
A personal strategic plan is a living document and will change throughout your career. Strategic plans will help you identify and prioritise key tasks and potential stumbling blocks that need to completed or overcome in order to ensure you achieve your career goals. Your plan should be renewed on a weekly basis in order to ensure that your activity (energy) is aligned with your personal strategic goals, ensuring a maximum return on energy is achieved.
