The advantages of learning Irish
As we are currently in the middle of Seachtain na Gaeilge, I thought it would be appropriate to try and pen a blog (although rusty) in our official first language.
I agree that Irish is not the language of Commerce and that knowledge of the Irish language will rarely give you a competitive edge in business but the learning of Irish has many advantages. Pupils who have a bilingual education find it easier to learn a third or a fourth language (Ceroz and Valenzia 1994), they attain higher scores in English and Maths (Education research Centre 2011) and they also have improved communication and social skills (Cummins 2000).
In terms of employment, if you have Irish, you will find it easier to pass the examination to become a guard or a teacher. Many other public sector opportunities exist for those who have a fluency in the Irish language, especially translator roles in Brussels. It is estimated that there will be a requirement for 180 translators in the Irish language, working directly for the European Union, prior to the end of 2021.
Outside of educational attainment and some career opportunities the Irish languages explains in great depth the history and culture of this small island and essentially who we are as a nation. From making sense to the meaning of place names to explaining how so many of us added such richness to the English language through poetry, the Arts and Theatre, the flowery Irish language can take much credit.
With a Pop Up Gaeltacht set to take over half of Dame Street in Dublin on March 16th, set to attract thousands of punters wishing to use their cupla focail, there has never been a better time to join in the fun and celebrate our unique language and heritage.
