Last Wednesday evening, lots of the team in Abrivia took part in the Grant Thornton 5K Corporate Challenge Run in the National Sport Campus, Dublin 15. We had a great evening, the sun was shining, everyone enjoyed the run and there were even free burgers when we crossed the finish line!
The health benefits of training and participating in a 5K run are obvious but there are many more reasons to get involved in these kind of team bonding events in your workplace:
Get to know your colleagues
We so often interact with our colleagues on professional matters but don’t necessarily get to know about them and their interests outside work, particularly if you work in a very large company. You could be sitting across the room from a marathon runner, international footballer, wildlife photographer or concert pianist without knowing it.
Create some ‘healthy’ competition
As Recruiters, we tend to be a competitive bunch! Admittedly our 5K run last Wednesday did create some internal competition but it was all good fun. We made sure that runners/joggers of all levels could take part in the 5K and compete equally for an internal prize of ‘Best Abrivia Team’.
Work together to ‘Give Back’
Participating in a team bonding activity could be a good way for you and your colleagues to raise money for charity or even volunteer for a day. For our 5K Run we raised money for a great charity Aware, which is our chosen company charity for 2015. Click here to learn more about our work with Aware.
Socialise with your colleagues
We spend so much time in work, our colleagues become our social network too. Many team bonding events offer the opportunity to socialise with colleagues in a more relaxed environment, and it’s one that doesn’t have to involve excess alcohol in the pub on a Friday night i.e. it’s a healthy option!
Find a new hobby/sport you enjoy
By participating in a team bonding activity with work, you might even find a new hobby or sport you enjoy. A number of employees in Abrivia took up running to complete the 5K and as a result are hooked on the sport. There’s already talk of 10K run in July…..
We’ll also be participating in the 5K Run of the Grant Thornton series in September, maybe you and your colleagues would like to join us! For more information click here.
