Christmas naturally brings with it a rush of excitement and busyness in our personal lives that can sometimes distract us from work. It can be easy to lose focus when the days left until Christmas start running out and the idea of starting a new project or getting stuck into a new piece of work is highly unappealing when you know a week or two off is on the horizon. More and more phone calls end up in voicemails and out of office emails start filling up your inbox as people embark on annual leave for their Christmas break. Starting afresh in January seems like a great idea.
This doesn’t have to be the case though. In many ways Christmas can be a great time to plough through work and even close deals. Take advantage of the fact that your own office and your clients’ offices might be quieter to tidy up a few loose ends, do some admin you were putting off or make plans for the first business development calls you want to make in January. There’s a myth that recruitment is quiet around Christmas time but this is not always the case – many businesses are keen to have all hiring requirements wrapped up before the New Year and use up what’s left of their recruitment budget. Along the same lines, candidates who may wish to make a move in the New Year might be happy to learn more about the market in December via a chat with a recruiter.
The New Year is meant to be a fresh start after a relaxing break so make the most of the last few weeks before Christmas to close off unfinished work so you can come back in January with a clear mindset and enthusiasm for the year ahead. Also, people tend to be in good spirits around Christmas so who knows what sort of deals can be closed and relationships started in this time of goodwill.
